WHAT’S A DONUT GOT TO DO WITH PRIDE?

“May 1959

Ten years before Stonewall, Cooper Donuts, a donut shop squeezed between two gay bars on S. Main St., was rocked by the attempted arrest of three people whose outward gender identities did not match their identification. Back then, raids like these were all too common.

But for the patrons of this small, trans-friendly donut shop, enough was enough. They forced the police to retreat by throwing coffee cups and donuts.

When the cops returned with backup, they closed the street. But the rioters—including transgender people, gay men, and their allies—continued their stand. They danced and sang in the streets, proud of who they were, and proud of who they would become.”
